:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Timothy L. Howard -- Disappointing overall : This book is well written and has some interesting plot features and characters. Nevertheless, I found it rather less than exciting. It perhaps does resemble some of the old Basil Rathbone films — I have seen most of them, although none recently — but by the same token it reads almost like a film script turned to prose. It seems rather thin and shallow overall. As a confirmed Sherlockian and a student of the Canon, I was hoping for more. Holmes’ reasoning at several points in the case seems very unlike that of the original character. Also, if you’re looking for a mystery set in WW II London, there are better ones — some of the Inspector Troy books by John Lawton, for example. I note that several other reviewers enjoyed this book wholeheartedly, but if you’re looking for a cracking good Holmes story in the true spirit of the originals, this probably won’t satisfy you. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Not a typical story : I can't complain all that much, it was more or less advertised as a readable Holmes story/Basil Rathbone movie. Watson wasn't a boob, the villain and the motive pretty good; just wasn't that engaging. I would have appreciated more playing up of the war atmosphere but I can't say it stunk overall and the character of the American reporter was acceptable. Tried to fit a LOT in that didn't always make sense or advance the plot but as I said, it did keep me reading overall. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Rory Coker -- An interesting adventure of Holmes and Watson, but with a fatal plot flaw : Following in the footsteps of a long series of 1940s Universal films in which Holmes and Watson (and Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, etc.) are in the England of the early 1940s with no explanation, the present author has Holmes and Watson (and Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, etc.) in the same circumstances, as blacked-out London tries to recover from the Blitz. The main plot is a complex business, in which someone seems to be recreating the Ripper murders, for motives which are difficult even for Holmes to unravel. The main problem with the novel, a problem which many readers will find unacceptable, is that the plot requires Mycroft Holmes to have made a catastrophically bad and foolish decision. Quite a bit of space is also wasted on antics of a plucky female journalist from the USA, who provides an implausible romantic interest for Watson, and even worse, Holmes himself is supplied with a romantic interest, albeit one safely far in the dead past. I give the author A for effort and C for execution. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2021 )
- from vegasbill -- VINE VOICE : Somewhat disappointing ( 3.0 out of 5 stars )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Margaret A. Davis -- Jack the Ripper is back. Or is he? Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson are on the case! : What a tour de force! I would expect no less of a Sherlock Holmes novel based on the 1940's WWII film series starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Fire Enthusiast -- Very good - and true to the Sherlock canon : I enjoyed this book because it was true to the Sherlock canon - with one note. Sherlock has been moved to the WW2 era. Because, in 1942, the Basil Rathbone Sherlock series of movies moved to this era with "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror". - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Sylvane -- I enjoyed this Sherlock Study : I can't, however, give it a five-star rating. I declared to myself I know who Crimson Jack is within a page or two of meeting him. I was right & I don't think I'm that good a detective. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Justin Webb -- A Big Hug of a Book : This book is a big hug. I grew up watching the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films, they were repeated ad infinitum on BBC 2 in the mornings. This is a faithful recreation the Universal World War 2 era pictures as opposed to the traditional settings of the books and the two 20th Century Fox Films. It also features a Watson who is Doyle’s own creation rather than Nigel Bruce’s endearing old duffer. It’s an exciting story, with lots of nods to Holmes’s Victorian roots - the antagonist appears to be a reincarnated Jack the Ripper, with the modern spin of spies, special ops, and the ever present threat of air raids. It’s a proper page turner. If you need an exciting Sherlock Holmes story and a nostalgic hit, then this is the book for you. It’s also very poignant, there were several points where the plight of Londoners and their valour in adversity are keenly felt, and our dear intrepid duo are also laid perhaps a little more bare than we are used to. I cannot recommend it more highly, a five star read. There is apparently a sequel forthcoming featuring Professor Moriarty and spontaneous combustion! I can’t wait for that! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- World War 2 Sherlock Holmes : If you have ever watched the Basil Rathbone, Sherlock Holmes films made during the War you will recognize the feel of the story. But without the stupid Doctor Watson, who always in the films is so bumbling. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 23, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from alan cooper -- Good atmosphere and decent mystery. : The portrayal of Holmes was spot on and the blitz atmosphere was well realised. The mystery was enjoyable but the one jarring element was the character of the American female reporter,I found her very annoying calling Holmes Sherlock was especially grating. I don’t recall anyone calling him Sherlock in any of the 40’s films. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2021 )
